In 1998 after his first trip to Austin, Svenningsen invented the songwriter scene ”Writers Club” in Århus (the second biggest city in Denmark) had 1 – 2 monthly shows, and he was the host on this scene until 2006.
It's a two-fold mission: to link talented musical artists from two countries that appreciate, cultivate and exalt live music into worthy collaborations that produce new material and to find new ways to share the results with the world
The House of Songs is a one-year partnership between a group of Danish songwriters guilds (led by the DJBFA and DPA for contemporary composers) and songwriters and producers in Austin, Texas, in which Scandinavian and American artists will collaborate on new material and find new ways to distribute songs.
The Austin liaison for The House of Songs is award-winning singer-songwriter and film and music producer Troy Campbell, who attended the Danish songwriters guild’s Song Island (on the wind-powered, green-living island of Samsoe) in 2002 and co-wrote with Danish rock-roots-pop star Poul Krebs; he and roots-rock artist Kristian Svenningsen are slated to visit Austin and The House of Songs in October and perform.
Troy Campbell has compiled a circle of the best Austin-based songwriters to create productive and lasting partnerships between Scandinavian and American songwriters. He will work with visiting songwriters and serve as The House of Songs project ambassador, chief executive and artistic adviser.
Visiting songwriters will have the opportunity to record demos of the new material and to participate in video blogs and journals. Booked shows with the first Scandinavian songwriters are scheduled for October in a range of popular clubs in Austin.
A two-bedroom house in South Austin — which will be equipped with WiFi, Gibson guitars and a Baldwin piano, and bicycles — will be where visiting songwriters live, co-write and explore the music scene during nine- to 12-day stays in “the Live Music Capital of the World.”
From Denmark every year come Danish bands and songwriters — as well as heads of Danish performing rights groups — to Austin’s South By Southwest Music Festival. The energy, fun and music dynamic therein serve as one inspiration for The House of Songs, which will offer a year-round opportunity for musicians.
Austin’s The House of Songs is the latest effort by the Songwriter Guild of Denmark to grow and preserve the creativity of its arts and artists. It operates others in New York and Los Angeles and Spain, Portugal and Greece.
